I shared the article from Fangoria earlier discussing the new TV series (click the link for the Fangoria article), but that’s not the only exciting news we’ve seen so far. Paired with what was a bit of a teaser that might or might not have been intentional on Sean S. Cunningham’s Cameo page, it looks like we’re possibly getting a new movie next year as well. If you followed that link to Cameo, it looks like it was edited out, but it was still caught by Bloody-Disgusting stating the following:
Sean S. Cunningham directed and produced the seminal horror film Friday the 13th, creating the iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The movie has spawned 12 installments with a 13th scheduled for next year.

If you’ve followed the legal battle that’s been going on, things were finally settled. Original director, Sean S Cunningham essentially got the rights to masked Jason as long as he can get permission from the writer of the original screenplay, Victor Miller. Miller on the other hand got the rights to his original screenplay, but only in the US. Yes, very complicated indeed.
What this means so far is that Miller has definitely greenlit a series on Peacock using the rights that he owns. What isn’t confirmed, however, is the Jason movie from Cunningham. I can only assume that is waiting on or has already been denied approval from Miller. As a fan, I can only hope that royalties are offered, hands are shook, and we get all the new content.
As for the series that was announced today, I get a bit of a Bates Motel vibe with it being a prequel / drama. The only difference is that Jason as a kid doesn’t sound very interesting, I’m definitely more interested in how fucked up Pamela was before she was a contestant on Snapped. Looking forward to checking it out either way.
