Jason X is one of those guilty pleasure movies for me. It’s not one of my favorites in the franchise but this is certainly one I can go back to and watch again and not feel bad about it like a few of the previous entries. I was in high school when this movie came out, and this is the Metallica of movies, claiming this movie was pirated and ruined its box office release. Well, guilty as charged, I was one of the many who got to see this movie before it was out in theaters. It didn’t stop me though, this was one of the first horror movies I got to actually see in theaters which is probably one of the reasons this movie holds that place in my heart. I’ve bought 3 physical copies of the DVD over the years (I still have 2 of them, don’t ask).
This movie has its issues like you’d expect from any “in space” horror movie, but it also still has some of the coolest action and kill sequences in the franchise and probably one of the coolest kills in any slasher. I’m of course referencing Billy Madison‘s teacher getting her head smashed in after being frozen in liquid nitrogen. This is also the film that gives us Uber Jason, which for being so late in the franchise is a pretty iconic look to give one of the biggest horror faces. This is definitely of that age where the CGI is…pretty terrible and hasn’t aged well. Look at the Blade movies if you want some pretty egregious examples. The kills that are done practically still look pretty good, the ones that weren’t…well…
Either way, I’m just glad I’m out of the ‘slum’ movies of the franchise and can get back to the last few which are some of the more fun films in the franchise. Let’s get through this one, shall we?
The Kills
- Johnson (Soldier #1) – Looks like he was beaten with something and then hung? He’s killed offscreen and I can’t tell if the beating part would have killed him but being hung would do the trick regardless so counting this as a hanging.
- 4 Guards – One he kinda low key hangs with a chain, one he uses as a bullet shield (I believe I counted this before in the Rob Zombie Halloween kill analysis as killing him with his bare hands, not sure I agree with that now, but for consistency sake) and the other 2 he bludgeons to death with what looks like a pipe. After typing all of that I realize that I put it in reverse order, but I had to stop and rewind frame by frame to make sure I got it all.
- Dr. Wimmer – David Cronenberg gets impaled through the back when Jason launches that pipe from earlier.
- Adrienne – This is what I was talking about earlier. She gets her head dipped in liquid nitrogen and then smashed to pieces on a table. This might upset some people, but I’m counting this as her being killed by Jason’s bare hands, simply because this is the only nitrogen kill I can think of other than the one in Freaky and I think the bigger numbers are more fun for all of us. Generalization is king, says the guy trying to compare killers by their methods of killing people.
- Stoney – Stabbed in the stomach with the space age surgical implement we’ll be mentally replacing with a machete in this movie.
- Azrael – He gets crumpled by Jason’s bare hands.
- Dallas – The writer, Todd Farmer, gets his head smashed against the wall. At least in this cameo he didn’t write himself having some pretty over the top sex scene.
- Sven – Snaps his neck
- Condor – Impaled on a giant screw. I’m not entirely sure what the function of this was supposed to be other than for someone to fall on it.
- Geko – Slits her throat.
- Kicker – Cuts the dude in half. Fun stuff.
- Briggs – Impaled on an anchor. So I’m not sure how a space anchor works, but it still seems more functional than a giant floor screw.
- Fat Lou – Going through the list of characters, I don’t remember seeing this one get killed and couldn’t figure out what happened to him, then I remember a scene where they find a bunch of remains. He’s killed offscreen and it was obviously one of those crazy kills like Paula in Part VI but we don’t get to see anything so I’m just going to throw it in unknown.
- Professor Lowe – Killed offscreen, presumably by the machete he takes. You see his head later in a jump scare (this frame is definitely not designed to be paused through) so we’ll count it as a decapitation.
- Crutch – Electrocuted.
*This might be contradictory to some other times where I counted stinger kills thinking the killer wouldn’t let them get away, but I’m not counting Sgt. Marcus as dead when he’s thrown through a door in the opening. He still looks alive when he’s on the ground is all. I actually had to double check my Part VIII analysis to make sure I didn’t count the cook, and while I wasn’t kind enough to put this little note about it, I definitely didn’t count him. Good on me.
**Also worth noting, this movie has a lot of incidental deaths that Jason didn’t really do. I mean, sure they would have been just fine if he wasn’t doing his kill kill kill ma ma ma thing all over the Grendel (every time I hear this name all I think is grundle, so that’s what I always end up calling this ship) but he didn’t actually kill them, so I’m not putting them on here. Gotta give other killers a fair chance. For example, I’m not counting Brodski or Waylander because they kinda kill themselves to fend off Jason.
***Hopefully the last note, I haven’t counted dream deaths in previous analysis’s I’ve done, so I’m not going to count the two VR chicks either. If the dream death results in conscious death, I’ll count it (looking at you, Mr. Krueger).
