This one is going to be interesting, and yes, I’ll be covering this one a little differently than pretty much every other horror movie I discuss as it’s a crossover. I will be counting Freddy and Jason’s kills and comparing them but I will only be including Jason’s for the overall count. For this article, I’ll be looking at this like a movie in the Friday the 13th franchise, meaning I’ll be doing a completely different one when I start to look at A Nightmare on Elm Street at the beginning of next year.
As any young horror fan (I was around 17 when this film came out) I was in love with this movie. I own 3 copies of it to this day and have bought the soundtrack twice although I have no clue where either copy are. I listened to it almost daily though. As an adult, this movie doesn’t quite hit the same. The effects are kind of outdated much like every other horror movie of that era and the story line is fairly mediocre. I don’t think anyone can complain about the battle royale that is the 3rd act though.
I think this movie works much better as a Nightmare film (aside from some of the pretty poor dialogue) than a Friday film, and while Jason was never exactly a scholar he’s nothing but a puppet through the majority of this. Also worth mentioning, this is probably my least favorite representation of Jason. I’m not trying to hate on Ken Kirzinger, but the popular opinion and my own opinion are comparable. I’d much rather have Kane Hodder for this one. Also, the actual look is smooth, I don’t know what the common opinion is on this, but I’d of also much preferred a more ragged look to my zombie Jason. Just nitpicks though. As I mentioned, this one feels much more like a Nightmare film, and when I get to that kill analysis I’m sure I’ll have much better things to say about it. Either way, lets get to it.
The Kills
Jason Voorhees
- Trey – Stabbed a whole bunch of times and then gets folded in half. The wrong way. Definitely a fun kill to introduce us to Jason’s “non dream kills”. It helps that Trey is an asshole too.
- Blake’s Father – Gets decapitated offscreen. I kinda hate this kill, how he’s just sitting there conveniently waiting on Blake to shake him for his head to pop off like a wine cork.
- Blake – Slashed with a machete through his dads head. Ok, this scene was kinda funny, guess his head falling into his lap wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
- Gibb and Rapey Ravey guy – Double impalement. Still fun when the rave guy gets yeeted.
- Party Goer – Gets his neck snapped. Like his head is facing literally the wrong direction.
- Shack – He lights Jason on fire, in what is a cool fire stunt, then gets impaled through his back with a flaming machete. Nice little spit up of blood to punctuate.
- 6 more party goers – He slashes them in a nice little rave massacre. I get a kick of the one guy screaming that he killed his brother and then the slash marks across his chest are the exact opposite direction of where he was going down on the machete, not including the fact the machete didn’t land anywhere near him.
- Deputy Scott Stubbs – Electrocuted.
- Freeburg – I struggle on if who’s kill I should count this as, but ultimately Jason gets it as he deals the death blow. He’s possessed by Freddy as a means to tranquilize Jason for you know. Plot stuff. Then Jason cuts him in half. So another slashing for the record.
- Linderman – Jason launches him across the room and gets impaled on something sticking out of the wall. I usually try and figure out what it is, but honestly a lot of these movies just put random lethal objects…everywhere.
- Kia – Slashed with a machete and yeeted into a tree.
Freddy Krueger
- Little girl in the cold open – It’s down offscreen but it’s very implied. I’m not even going to put this as an unknown cause of death. He’s known for being the Springwood slasher, lets open up his first kill as a slashing!
- Bobby – Gets his wrists slit.
- Mark – Gets slashed in the face then is burnt to death so I’ll count it for the burning. Kinda dig Freddy’s branding font. I need to find a copy.
- Lori’s Mom – I’m not counting these dream sequences, but it’s insinuated that this actually took place so I’m counting her. She’s slashed to death with the finger-knife gloves.
Conclusion
Jason Voorhees kills 17 people while Freddy Krueger kills 4 in Freddy VS Jason.
