While this entry is most people’s favorite entry in the series, hot take but this one is kind of in the middle for me. Maybe one day I’ll put up a video / article ranking the series that I’m covering, but for now let’s just talk about Jason Lives.
After the backlash of part 5 and there not being a Jason in there (sounds kinda like Halloween III, right? Can’t wait to cover that one in a review one day), Mancuso and the rest of Paramount knew they had to bring him back and this is what we got. This movie has some cool things about it, it almost feels more like an action movie version of a Friday the 13th flick with some of the high brow sequences. It’s also got a more 80’s hair band and monster movie feel to it thanks to the fun vision by director Tom McLoughlin. These aren’t my favorite characters of the movie, but they are certainly serviceable and we do get probably the best version of Tommy Jarvis, portrayed sarcastically by Thom Mathews.
I say this movie is in the middle for me because this movie is fairly typical of my generation, as this is the film that most of the teen slashers strived to be whether they realized it or not so by the time I was old enough to really analyze what I was watching I had already seen this type of plot play out hundreds of times. If I were fresh watching this series or watched it in ’86, I could easily see why others think so highly of this movie. I just have a lot more fun with the others, is all. Even the cheaper ones. The fact that this one doesn’t follow the typical formula that the previous entry has taken is definitely refreshing, and this is certainly the highest quality film we get until the remake (I’m referring to quality, that doesn’t necessarily mean I loved the remake). This will, however, definitely be what I use to get my son into the series as this is the only entry with no nudity. Good parenting, right? I’ll get to my thoughts on the film in far more depth when I get to the review, but for now we have some kills to look into.
The Kills
- Allen Hawes – Gets his heart ripped out, but it goes all the way in the back. Your first bit of proof that Zombie Jason isn’t here to play.
- Darren – Impaled in the gut with the fence from the cemetery. I’ve always appreciated how he just discards of the body afterwards. I believe as the kids would say, he was yeeted.
- Lizbeth – Impales her face with the fence post and drowns her in a puddle. I’m going to count this as an impalement though, pretty sure that would be fatal regardless of the drowning.
- Burt – His head gets crushed into a tree. I’m just going to count this as being killed with his bare hands.
- Stan, Katie, Larry – Decapitates all 3 in one swing with the machete.
- Roy – Found later on in the movie in pieces. I’m putting this as unknown but man Jason had a time with this guy.
- Martin – Stabbed in the throat with his broken gin(?) bottle. Guess it was the death of him. Perhaps he shouldn’t have been such a fart head. Sorry, I’ll stop.
- Steven and Annette – Double impalement with a machete. It seems like every time I look at some of these I have to remind myself the difference between impalement and stabbing. Thanks, Google!
- Nikki – Gets her face imprinted through the wall of an RV. Pretty sure steel / fiberglass doesn’t work that way, but it sure is fun to watch.
- Cort – Stabbed in the ear. If that wasn’t enough, when the RV flips it lands right where both his and Nikki’s heads were, so man I’d hate to be the guy who had to scrape that mess up.
- Sissy – Gets her head ripped off. I kinda dig how they give Zombie Jason that super strength.
- Paula – This is a lot like Roy’s kill. You know Jason has a field day with her, but you can’t really tell what he did. She’s found later and the the whole room is nothing but blood.
- Thornton – Has a throwing knife get him in the head. If you’ve ever played the game and wondered where in the movies you can see throwing knives…it’s this one.
- Officer Pappas – Get his head crushed by Jason. No eyeballs shooting at the screen with this one though.
- Sheriff Garris – Well, he’s not a contortionist as his body just doesn’t bend back that way. I’ll look at this as being killed with his bare hands.
